    At least 32 people were killed in September 2021 in South Kivu Province, as reported in the traditional « Surprise Bulletin » of the organization Synergie des Associations des Jeunes pour l’Education Civique, Electorale et la Promotion des Droits de l’Homme au Sud-Kivu (SAJECEK-Forces vives).

    According to the bulletin, apart from the 32 people usually killed by insecurity, 30 other mob justice cases were registered in the same month. A popular justice that usually results in the beheading of people accused of rape, theft, witchcraft, etc. These defendants are sometimes burned alive.

    In addition, 33 houses were attacked by armed bandits, 31 vehicles were robbed while 27 cases of abductions were recorded by this organization.

    In the chapter of killings, it is Bukavu who comes first with 8 cases followed by the Uvira region with 6 cases. In third place comes Kabare with 5 cases while Idjwi and Walungu claim 4 cases each. Shabunda and Fizi each have two cases followed by Mwenga with 1 case.

    Uvira and Walungu lead in the chapter of Mob Justice cases with 10 and 6 cases respectively, followed by Kabare with 5 cases, 4 cases each for Idjwi and Fizi while Bukavu recorded one case, according to the organization.

    The « Bulletin Surprise » also informs that the south region of South Kivu has remained the scene of kidnappings. For the month of September, 17 cases out of the 27 are recorded in the Fizi region alone.

    Last August, SAJECEK reported 31 people killed in South Kivu. One more for this month of September.

    He notes that peaceful citizens are murdered daily by armed bandits without the authorities making it a major and priority concern of the government.

    « What is the provincial government waiting for to reconsider this issue of insecurity that has become endemic? » asks Sajecek Forces Vives.
